We like to believe childhood ends when we grow up. In practice, the version of you that was six, or nine, or thirteen is still very much in the room, especially when you feel unsafe. Inner child healing is simply the work of noticing that, and responding differently.
These are the signs I see most often in sessions. If several feel familiar, that is useful information, not a verdict.
1. Criticism knocks you sideways
A small piece of feedback lands like a judgement on your entire worth. You replay it for days. That reaction usually belongs to a younger you who learned that mistakes cost love.
2. You apologise for existing
Sorry for asking, sorry for taking your time, sorry for having needs. Chronic apologising is often a child's strategy for staying out of trouble, still running in an adult body.
3. Rest makes you anxious
If you can only relax once everything is finished, you may have learned that your value comes from being useful. Nothing is ever finished, so rest never arrives.
4. You lose yourself in relationships
You adapt so completely to the other person that you forget your own preferences. This is not love, it is an old safety plan. Children who kept the peace at home often become adults who disappear inside partnerships.
5. Anger arrives disproportionately
A small comment triggers an intensity that surprises even you. Usually the reaction is not to the present moment, it is to the pile of unspoken moments behind it.
6. Money feels frightening
If your home carried financial fear, your nervous system may still associate money with danger. You either grip it or push it away, and both feel exhausting.
7. You cannot receive
Compliments get deflected. Help gets refused. Gifts create guilt. Somewhere you learned it was safer to give than to need.
What the healing actually looks like
People expect inner child healing to mean reliving painful memories in detail. It does not. In my sessions the work is gentler and more practical. We identify the pattern, find the age it belongs to, and give that part of you the response it never received — acknowledgement, safety, permission. Chakra healing and Reiki support the process by settling the nervous system, so the insight is felt in the body rather than only understood in the mind.
Clients often describe the change as quiet rather than dramatic. Criticism stings for an hour instead of a week. A boundary comes out of your mouth without a rehearsal. You notice you did not apologise, and nothing bad happened.
That is what healing looks like in real life. Not a new personality — the one you had before you learned to be careful.
